Weekly Virtual STEAM Challenges

While our Museum is currently closed due to the recent COVID-19 restrictions our programming continues.

We understand that parents are juggling a lot at home at this time. We have put together some
super funself-led (means your child leads their learning), open-ended  (means can take as long or a little as you like)  projects!

Use whatever materials you have around the house to complete each challenge and be sure to check back each week - you don't want your children missing out on the fun and learning. For added fun, be sure to post your favorite photos of your children's creativity on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Week Four: Build a City

Each of the challenges are designed to be completed over a period of several days.

Day 1. Watch the Video and start with Activity A.
Day 2 Kids may want to watch the video again if they like and then engage in Activity B and finally
Day 3 Choose to watch the video again or not and engage in Activity C.

DAY 1 (Activity A) Build the Bones

Create: Get ready for a week as a Civil Engineer! Today you get to begin building your city. What is the name of your city? What are important elements that your city will need included? Will you have a hospital, grocery store or post office? Plan out where those essentials will be in your city and begin creating!

Play: Parents, this project can be as big or as small as your budding civil engineer would like it to be. Consider providing some new materials this week such as Lego's, building blocks or cardboard boxes to create the city with. Once your child is done on the first day, take a tour. Ask questions and give some compliments on their creation!

Day 2 (Activity B) Get Creative

Create: Now it's time to add some of the fun elements of entertainment to your city! Begin by creating some parks, candy stores or toy stores in your city that would be just for fun. Now get REALLY creative! Will your city be the first where people travel from place to place on gigantic slides? Or will your city be the first to be an underwater city? What would you need to add to make your city completely unique from anything created before?

Play: ake another tour of your child's city! What did they add? What can you think of to add to their creation!

Day 3 (Activity C) Finishing Touches

Create: Let's make your city official! Today you can choose- do you want to make a map of your city or a travel brochure or how about the form of currency for your city? Will it be paper money or cookies? Enjoy adding the finishing touches on your city.

Play: Enjoy being a civilian in your child's city. Maybe get some Lego people, some dolls or some figurines and play "A Day In The City" as you navigate all your child has created this week!
